DIY Spa Day Recipes

The recipes below are from an article written by Peggy Riccio about a DIY spa day presentation by member Konstantina (Tina) Zaras of KIPOS Botanicals.

Basic Salt Scrub Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely ground sea salt

  • 1/2 cup herb-infused oil, sesame or sweet almond oil

  • 20 drops essential oil (single or blend of choice)

Pour oil into a bowl and add essential oils. Stir to combine.

Add salt and mix well. Label and store in a glass jar for 6-12 months.

Use as an all-over body scrub in shower or bath (oil can make tub surface slippery, so make sure to clean off tub after use).

Can also be used as a foot scrub in a foot bath. In this case you may want to combine finely ground with coarsely ground sea salt (1/2 cup each).

Rosy Face Mask

Ingredients

  • Montmorillonite Clay**, (also called French Pink Clay because it is sourced in France) OR other Clay of Choice, such as French Green Clay or Rhassoul Clay

  • Powdered Rose Petals

  • Herbal Hydrosol of choice, herbal infusion (cooled), milk, honey, plain water

Mix equal amounts of clay and powdered rose petals in a bowl and keep in a glass jar.

When you are ready to make your mask, measure 2 1/2 tsps of the clay mixture into a small bowl and add 2 tsp liquid of your choice.

Mix together and allow to sit for a couple of minutes so the dry ingredients absorb the liquid. Check to see that you like the consistency, adding more liquid if needed. You want it to spread easily on your face.

To use, apply a thick layer of the mask on clean face (and neck if desired). After 10 minutes, or when it just begins to dry around the perimeter of your face, rinse off with warm water or wipe off with a warm, wet washcloth. Afterwards, apply your favorite moisturizer.

**Bentonite Clay is the same type of clay, however it is white not pink; feel free to substitute with this

Foaming Facial Cleanser

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp castile soap

  • unscented 2 1/2 Tbsp herbal hydrosol of choice (OR for Oily skin: 2 Tbsp hydrosol and 1/2 Tbsp witch hazel)

  • 1 tsp oil, such as olive, sweet almond or sesame

  • 8-12 drops essential oil of choice (skin-loving EOs include neroli, rose, lavender, chamomile)

In a glass measuring cup combine the castile soap, hydrosol and witch hazel if using. Mix gently so as not to create a lot of foam.

Add oil and if using, the essential oil(s).

Transfer to a bottle with a pump top.

To use, dampen face and apply in circular motion, avoiding eyes. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 3-6 months.

(For ingredients, Tina recommended Starwest Botanicals and Mountain Rose Herbs. All Potomac Unit members get a discount with Mountain Rose Herbs if they apply the code from the Herb Society of America website. Members suggested MOM’s Organic Market and Whole Foods Market, and even the Container Store for the jars and bottles.)
